AIVAZOVSKY (GAIVAZOVSKY)
IVAN KONSTANTINOVICH.
1817-1900
Painter. Studied at the Academy of Arts In St. Petersburg (1833-1837). Showed his works at exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, the Society for the Promotion of Art, the Society of Art Exhibitions at the Academy of Sciences, the Society of Southern Russia Artists and at All-Russia exhibitions. The artist himself said that he had painted nearly, 6,000 pictures. His main theme is the marine scene. In 1844, the Academy of Arts conferred on Alvazovsky the title of Academician. Became professor In 1847. Among the pictures painted by Aivazovsky are "The Ninth Wave" (1850), "The Black Sea" (1881), "Amid the Waves" (1889) and "Pushkin by the Gurzuf Rocks" (1880). His pictures are preserved In the Tretyakov Art Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Hermitage, the Feodosia Picture Gallery (founded by the artist) and in many other museums in the country.
The picture "The Sea. Sunset" displayed in the Gallery was shown In the Tretyakov Art Gallery In 1989 and during an exhibition arranged by the Combined Art Studios in Khimki (1990).
